AI Voice Clones Used in Fake Family Emergency Calls

A worrying new tactic uses artificial intelligence to copy a persons voice from short audio clips found on social media or voice notes. The scammer then calls a relative and plays or speaks in a cloned voice, claiming to be in an accident, under arrest, or in urgent trouble and needing money right away.

The call is engineered to trigger panic. The cloned voice may cry, sound injured, or be cut off by a second person claiming to be a police officer, lawyer, or hospital staff. Victims are told to keep the call secret and transfer money immediately to help their loved one.

Because the voice sounds real, many people act before thinking. The cloned audio can be convincing for a short call, but it cannot answer questions only the real person would know.

Warning signs

  • An unexpected call claims a relative is in sudden danger and needs money now.
  • The caller insists on secrecy and discourages you from hanging up or calling back.
  • You are pushed toward fast, irreversible payments such as transfers or gift codes.
  • The voice avoids personal questions or gives vague answers.

How to protect yourself

  • Hang up and call the family member back on their known number to confirm.
  • Agree on a private family safe word that must be given during any emergency request.
  • Limit public voice and video clips, or set social media to private.
  • Never transfer money based on a single emotional phone call.
