WhatsApp Account Takeovers: The Friend In Need Scam

In this scam, a fraudster takes control of someones WhatsApp account and then messages everyone in their contacts. Because the message comes from a real, trusted number, the requests feel genuine. Common asks include help receiving a six digit code, an urgent loan, or a quick PayNow transfer that will be paid back later.
The takeover usually starts when the scammer tricks you into sharing a verification code. They may pose as WhatsApp support, a delivery service, or a friend who says they accidentally sent a code to your number. The moment you share that code, they register your account on their device and lock you out.
Once inside, the scammer moves quickly to message contacts before anyone notices. They may also turn on two step verification to make recovery harder for the real owner.
Warning signs
- A contact suddenly asks you to forward a verification code sent to your phone.
- A friend messages with an urgent money request and pushes for secrecy or speed.
- The writing style or tone feels slightly off compared to how the person normally types.
- You receive an unexpected WhatsApp registration code you did not request.
How to protect yourself
- Never share any verification or one-time code with anyone, including people who appear to be friends.
- Turn on two step verification in WhatsApp settings and add an email for recovery.
- Always confirm money requests by calling the person directly on a known number.
- If your account is hijacked, re-register with your number to log the scammer out, then warn your contacts.
