Fake Loan Approval Messages Are Surging in Singapore

A fast-spreading scam is targeting Singapore residents with messages that look like instant loan approvals. The message congratulates you on an approved loan of several thousand dollars and asks you to reply or tap a link to receive the funds. No application was ever made, yet the message is designed to feel urgent and official.
Once you respond, the scammer claims the money is ready but a processing fee, insurance deposit, or GST payment must be cleared first. They ask you to PayNow or bank transfer this fee to an individual account. After you pay, they invent more fees or simply disappear. No legitimate lender in Singapore asks you to pay money before disbursing a loan.
These messages often spoof real brand names, use the Merlion or bank logos, and copy the tone of genuine approval notices. Some now arrive on WhatsApp with a polished PDF letter attached to look convincing.
Warning signs
- You receive a loan approval for a loan you never applied for.
- You are asked to pay any fee upfront before receiving the loan.
- Payment is requested to a personal PayNow number or individual bank account.
- The sender pressures you to act within minutes or lose the offer.
- The contact only uses WhatsApp or SMS and avoids a verifiable office.
How to protect yourself
- Never pay an upfront fee to receive a loan. This is illegal for licensed moneylenders.
- Verify any lender against the Ministry of Law list of licensed moneylenders before engaging.
- Do not click links in unsolicited loan messages. Type official websites yourself.
- Block and report the number, then delete the message.
- If you are unsure, speak to a trusted, transparent loan comparison platform instead of the sender.
